  • The Institute for American Indian Studies Museum & Research Center preserves and educates through discovery and creativity the diverse traditions, vitality and knowledge of Native American cultures.

     

    In addition to special events and workshops, IAIS also houses a knowledgeable Education Department, dedicated to developing and providing in-depth and exciting programs for students of all ages. Schools from throughout the region take advantage of the Institute’s on-site facilities, while schools from across the country contact IAIS looking for reliable and accurate information. Each year, more than 10,000 people visit us and another 15,000 students participate in our education programs.
    Nature Trails
    IAIS has several leisurely nature trails winding through our 15 acre property, all leading to the replicated Algonkian village. Each trail features plant and tree identification signs, revealing traditional Native American uses for their natural world.
    School Programs
    Our interdisciplinary school programs are designed with the CT State Standards in mind to encourage discussions and provide interactive learning through hands-on activities either at our facility or yours. With a variety of age appropriate exploration exercises, your students will learn while having fun!  A number of additions can be made to the core program, including Native American games, stories and crafts.
    Scouting Programs
    The Institute for American Indian Studies offers a variety of interactive programs for Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts of all ages. Whether working towards a Merit Badge, Adventure or Journey, desiring to practice useful Scouting skills, or just looking to have an engaging learning experience, IAIS has a program for your Scouts. Sign up your patrol or den, or bring the entire Troop or Pack. An IAIS Scouting program will be an experience to remember!
    Summer Group Offerings
    The perfect programs for groups looking for a field trip or to plan a fun and informative day. If your facility needs an enjoyable and interactive program for campers this summer, IAIS has it.
    For over 40 years the Institute for American Indian Studies has offered engaging and exciting programming for groups of all ages. This summer, offer your campers an opportunity to have fun while learning about Native American Cultures. Adaptable to groups of any age or size, IAIS offers programming at the museum or can bring the fun to your facility.

     

    The IAIS’ Museum’s Regular Hours are:
    Monday – Tuesday Closed*
    Wednesday – 10am – 5pm
    Thursday – 10am – 5pm
    Friday – 10am – 5pm
    Saturday – 10am – 5pm
    Sunday – 12pm to 5pm
    (last admission at 4:30)
    *Closed to the general public. IAIS will make appointments and book education programs on Mondays and Tuesdays.
